Want to improve yourself in 2022 but have no clue where to start? If so, this article is for you as I go through exactly how to improve yourself in 2022.
To improve yourself in 2022 work on gaining and developing positive qualities/traits NOT having more stuff.
And this in itself will support you in becoming the person you want to be.
Easier said than done right?
Well not necessarily.
Especially when you’re given the right tools and know-how to be able to develop the positive qualities you want to develop within yourself, which is what I aim to teach you in this article.
So let’s get started.
Why develop positive qualities?
So let’s start at the very beginning with why bother developing any positive qualities at all?
That’s the purpose of life
My therapist once recited ‘most people think we’re here to achieve a blissful state but we’re actually here to develop qualities’.
In other words, our goal isn’t to reach a permanent state of happiness, joy, love, peace etc.
Our goal is instead, to develop and keep on developing positive qualities, which we can achieve through the struggles that we face and the negative qualities we experience.
Positive qualities make us feel good about ourselves
When we exhibit kindness, love, understanding, support etc. towards others (whether in our heads through our thoughts or verbally), not only do those on the receiving end experience a positive outcome, but we as the givers also feel good about ourselves in the process of displaying those positive qualities.
It contributes to the achievement of a goal
Developing positive qualities, although absolutely 100% possible, aren’t necessarily easy to acquire.
In fact, they require a lot of revisiting and repetition day in day out just like anything else in life.
However, once you do start noticing a difference in yourself by practising the tools I provide you with later on, and you start achieving the positive qualities you want to experience on a daily basis, you’re going to experience a greater sense of satisfaction and happiness in life, as a result, of your efforts.
What positive qualities to improve within yourself in 2022?
If you really don’t know what positive qualities you want to develop within yourself or are looking for someone to tell you or to give you reassurance/validation as to what positive qualities to develop, it’s up to you to learn how to listen and trust in your own inner voice as I talk more about in my article HOW TO FIND YOUR WORTH AND WHY IT MATTERS.
Why? Because I can’t tell you what positive qualities to develop because only you can know within yourself (i.e. your mind, heart and body) what positive qualities you want to develop.
And each person has different desires around what positive qualities they want to experience in their day to day lives.
What I can do though, is give you some pointers on how to decide for yourself what qualities/traits you want to develop.
How to decide what positive qualities/traits to improve within yourself in 2022?
Think about the people you admire most
We all have people in our lives, on TV or Youtube who we admire and wish we were a little bit more like.
But we don’t really stop to question what it is about them that we truly admire.
Nor do we believe we can develop the traits or qualities that they have.
Therefore, why this is a good place to start.
Define who you want to be
Defining who you want to be, involves knowing that categorically THIS is the kind of person you want to be and THIS is the kind of person you DON’T want to be.
And making a choice in the moment of who you want to be and who you don’t want to be.
So for instance, if you wish to be more confident, accepting, understanding, patient, kind (whatever it may be) before you do or say anything to anyone, you need to have the ability to be able to notice when you’ve veered yourself off track from being able to display the qualities you want to display in your own thoughts and find a way of talking to yourself back into them.
Therefore, it requires a lot of in the present moment thought and bodily awareness, self-awareness but also self-reflection in the times when you don’t catch yourself before you act or say anything.

Expand your awareness of you and your own patterns
As a result of the beliefs, we’ve formulated over the course of our lives both because of the interpretations of others and our acceptance of them, along with our own interpretations of society, the media, our families, other people etc., we have all developed habits and patterns, which do not align with the kind of people we want to be.
Therefore, by expanding your awareness of you and your own thought and behavioural patterns, you can (as I say above) catch yourself before you take any action, which doesn’t align with the kind of person you want to be and the kind of qualities you want to develop.
And, as a result, stopping you from doing or saying anything you’re going to regret later on (see also: 4 MIND-BLOWING TOOLS THAT WILL CHANGE YOUR WORLD AND HELP YOU TO OVERCOME PAST REGRETS).
What’s stopping you from gaining and developing new traits/qualities?
If you’ve gotten this far and there is still an element of doubt in your mind about being able to develop the kind of positive qualities others have or the kind of qualities you generally want to have to become the person you want to be, it’s likely your limiting beliefs that you can’t change and how you are IS the way that you are, is overriding.

Since, when you go through the therapeutic process you learn things about yourself you never even knew were there.
And when you implement the tools and practices they give you, such as the ones following, you begin to realise that actually, you can change in whatever way you want to change.
How to develop specific qualities/traits within yourself?
So now you know what positive qualities you want to develop within yourself, it’s time to take daily action on developing those positive qualities within you.
Starting with none other than meditation and visualisation.
1. Meditation and visualisation
To develop positive qualities with meditation and visualisation, you can meditate on the quality itself by reciting it to yourself with I AM [insert quality] just like a mantra.
In addition, at the same time (and if you wanted to), you could imagine what it would feel like were you to embody that quality/trait
Alternatively, if you didn’t have a specific quality you wanted to develop, you could instead recite I AM on its own to yourself, which is equally (if not more) as powerful.
2. Setting intentions practice
Another way you can begin to develop certain qualities/traits within yourself is by setting intentions towards the activities and interactions you’re going to have during the day, both in the evening before you go to bed and in the morning before you start your day (ideally, after you’ve meditated and before you’ve had breakfast since you’re more likely to do it if you do it this way).
The intentions you set, however, the evening before you went to bed, don’t necessarily have to be the same as those you set in the morning, they can be different because otherwise, you’ve got to try and remember and go back to your list the night before, which is a faff and will take longer.
And each quality feeds into the other anyway so it’s not a big deal if you don’t set the same intention as the ones you set the evening before.
What’s more important is that you take the action and set your intentions at both these times because this is what builds enough momentum for you to be able to see changes in your life.
On a side note, if I’m honest this is the tool and practice I love the most right now (it shifts and changes as I become well versed in one, discard others and discover and/or implement new ones).
What is an intention?
An intention is a deliberate choice in how you want to feel within yourself as you engage with others and undertake activities throughout your day.
So, for instance, it may be that you find it hard to be kind to certain people in your life but you want to be kinder to them so you set an intention that during all your interactions with them during the day (in your thoughts, words and actions) that you’re going to be kind to them regardless of what they do or say to you.
This, however, doesn’t mean you let them walk all over you and don’t instil any boundaries with them when you feel you need to. Instead, it means you instil boundaries with them in a way that’s kind and not hurtful to them and their thoughts and feelings.
Which you achieve by taking on responsibility and making that boundary about you, using ‘I’ statements and not them.
And before you enter any interaction(s) with them, you remind yourself of the intention you set the morning of the encounter, which I sometimes remember to do and sometimes don’t.

3. Give it up to God and your Guardian Angels
If you’re really struggling to shift a quality within you that you don’t like, in order to be able to replace it with a quality you do like and want, you can give it up to God and your Guardian Angels (as advised in Julia Cameron’s must read book The Artists Way).
As this will make you feel like you’re not alone in your struggle and are getting outside support from a power stronger than you in shifting the quality that you don’t like.
How to make time for gaining and developing qualities in your life?

However, with you learning to begin the process of letting go of some or all of those things, you’re going to have some space to add tools and practices into your life, which will enable you to improve yourself.

Clearing the way
Sometimes we have thoughts about ourselves and others, which simply aren’t true about who we are or who they are.

In addition, there may be people in your life who you don’t necessarily realise make you feel more tired and exhausted than you may already feel.

If you don’t believe you’re able to improve yourself by developing certain qualities that you want to have within yourself, then you’re not going to work on trying to develop those qualities.

And depending on what you believe is stopping you, will support you in considering other ways to implement the tools and techniques into your life.
As a result of all the above, you will find you have the motivation to develop the qualities you want to develop within yourself through undertaking the tools I provided above.
